English: Panthers Wrocław signed former Division I and CFL player Misiona Aiolupotea-Pei
Defensive lineman Misiona Aiolupotea-Pei is the latest signing of the Panthers Wrocław. The 26-year-old is a former teammate of Panthers linebacker Hubert Ogrodowczyk. His signing is another recruiting success as he joins the Panthers from the Canadian Football League (CFL). The defensive lineman, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, is usually just called „Misi.“
Actually, Misi had been a rugby player and his football knowledge was limited to the Adam Sandler movie „The Longest Yard“. Nevertheless, in 2015 he got a spot with the Gold Coast Stingrays in the Queensland Football League, where he impressed so much with 19 touchdowns scored that he was invited to the Down Under Bowl. There, Aiolupotea-Pei came to the attention of several American coaches. Convinced of his chance to be recruited by a US college, Misi trained hard. In addition to football practice, he worked in landscaping and also tried to convince his parents of the idea.
Because of his international status, Misi did not receive a scholarship or other financial aid, yet he decided to play for Riverside City College and pay the high costs himself. After two years in which he made the All-Conference Second Team once as well as Team Captain, his dream came true: he was recruited by Washington State University out of the PAC 12 of the NCAA Division I FBS. In his two years for the Cougars, he appeared mostly as a nose tackle in 25 games, six of them as a starter. In the process, he recorded 29 tackles, including 3.5 sacks.
Most recently, Misi tried his hand in the Canadian Football League. There, he was selected in the second round of the 2021 CFL Global Draft by the Edmonton Elks, but only made the practice roster during the season. After being released in the interim, he was on the practice squad with the Calgary Stampeders. It wasn’t until early June of this year that he was released by the team, where Keanu Ebanks also plays.

Wie Misi zum Football kam
Eigentlich war Misi Rugbyspieler gewesen und sein Football-Wissen beschränkte sich auf den Adam-Sandler-Film „The Longest Yard“ (Spiel ohne Regeln). Dennoch bekam er 2015 einen Platz bei den Gold Coast Stingrays in der Queensland-Footballliga, wo er mit 19 erzielten Touchdowns derart überzeugen konnte, dass er zum Down Under Bowl eingeladen wurde. Dort wurden einige amerikanische Trainer auf Aiolupotea-Pei aufmerksam. Überzeugt von seiner Chance, von einem US-College rekrutiert zu werden, trainierte Misi hart. Neben dem Football-Training arbeitete er in der Landschaftsgestaltung und überzeugte seine Eltern von der Idee.
Seine Zeit an den Colleges in den USA
Aufgrund seines internationalen Status bekam Misi weder ein Stipendium noch anderweitige finanzielle Hilfe, dennoch entschied er sich, für das Riverside City College zu spiele und die hohen Kosten selbst zu tragen. Nach zwei Jahren, in denen er es einmal in das All-Conference Second Team sowie zum Team Captain schaffte, erfüllte sich sein Traum: Er wurde von der Washington State University aus der PAC 12 der NCAA Division FBS rekrutiert. In seinen zwei Jahren für die Cougars kam er meist als Nose Tackle in 25 Spielen zum Einsatz, sechs davon als Starter. Dabei verzeichnete er 29 Tackles, darunter 3.5 Sacks.

Zuletzt versuchte sich Misi in der Canadian Football League. Nachdem er zwischenzeitlich entlassen worden war, stand er bei den Calgary Stampeders im Trainingskader. Erst Anfang Juni dieses Jahres wurde er beim Team, bei dem auch Keanu Ebanks spielt, entlassen.
