English: Fan opinion: ELF game on Mallorca
In the last few weeks there have been very vague rumors or mind games that a European League of Football game might be held on the Balearic island of Mallorca (western Mediterranean) in the future.
Privately, I have been to the beautiful island several times, which in the German media is often „reduced“ to the notorious Ballermann and is therefore only associated by many people in Germany with „bucket drinking on the beach“. Oddly enough, even if they have never been there themselves.
I make no secret of the fact that I’ve already been around the Bierkönig. However, to this day I still cannot understand why this relatively small „party area“ has such a negative effect on the overall reputation of the island? Probably because scandals about drunken party tourists sell better than a report about the Oranges of Sóller.
After all the vacation-free time caused by the pandemic, I recently spent a few days on the almost 3,600 square kilometer island of the famous slingshots (Els Foners Balears). The mind games that arose about a possible ELF game prompted me to take a closer look at football on the island while on vacation.
Suitable stadium on Mallorca
There are a few sports fields or sports facilities on Mallorca, but the home stadium of the oldest football club on the island, the RCD Mallorca (Real Club Deportivo Mallorca/ Reial Club Deportiu Mallorca), could certainly be interesting for an ELF game in my opinion. The „Visit Mallorca Estadi“ or „Estadi de Son Moix“ in Palma was opened in 1999 and offers seats for over 23,000 spectators. Coincidentally, it is currently being renovated or expanded in the area of the spectator canopies.

The stadium is located in the Cami del Rei in close proximity to the Ma-20 motorway and can be easily reached in 15-20 minutes by car directly from the airport in Palma de Mallorca. If you stay in downtown Palma, you should be able to get to the stadium easily by bike or public transport. Parking spaces at the stadium are available and could certainly also be used for a power party.

Mallorca Voltors
American football itself is still a marginal phenomenon on the island and among the Mallorquins. However, Mallorca has a football team in the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano (LNFA Serie A). The Mallorca Voltors, based in the immediate vicinity of the RCD stadium (in the Polideportivo Son Moix). The origins of this team go back to 1987 and some Germans also played for the Voltors. For example Max Siemssen or Markus Hachenberg, both of whom are now at Frankfurt Galaxy. Yago Rivero, who trained with the Voltors and also played for the team in the Spanish season this year, is also active with the Barcelona Dragons.
The season of the LNFA and thus the Mallorca Voltors usually begins in spring and ends with the final („Spanish Bowl“) around May/June. An additional participation of the Mallorca Voltors in the European League of Football is therefore at least theoretically conceivable. So far, however, the Voltors‘ home games have probably not been played in the big stadium, but on a field nearby. However, these should be well attended. In the 2022 season, the Voltors ended up 3rd in the East Conference.

Does the island have potential for the ELF?
According to statista.com, around 4.5 million air passengers from Germany arrived in Mallorca in 2016, and the island was one of the most popular travel destinations for Germans. Another statistic from 2018 shows that more than a third of all vacationers on Mallorca came from Germany. Incidentally, only 12 percent of respondents from a survey from 2017 stated that they wanted to spend their vacation in Mallorca because of the nightlife at Ballermann or El Arenal. Most of them came because of the „nature and landscape“.
In addition, there are tourists from other countries and the Spanish mainland. In 2018, the airport in Palma de Mallorca recorded a passenger volume of over 29 million people.
My personal conclusion is therefore: The European League of Football season is practically exactly in the main travel season for Mallorca. The weather during this period is mostly sunny, hot and dry. A suitable stadium for a match would in principle also be available. With the number of tourists on the island listed, tickets may sell out even faster than you might think. Ideal conditions to enrich your holiday with a football adventure weekend. I certainly wouldn’t fly to the island just for an ELF game, but if I were already on vacation on the island anyway, I would definitely buy a ticket to comfortably travel to the stadium by rental bike or cheap local transport.
It’s all still a mind game and we have to wait and see whether this will actually become reality. But if it really comes to that, you could say on the ELF Game Day in Mallorca in the future:

In den letzten Wochen gab es sehr vage Gerüchte bzw. Gedankenspiele, dass man zukünftig vielleicht ein Spiel der European League of Football auf der Baleareninsel Mallorca (westliches Mittelmeer) veranstalten könnte.
Privat war ich bereits mehrfach auf der wunderschönen Insel, die in den deutschen Medien oftmals nur auf den berüchtigten Ballermann „reduziert“ wird und deshalb von vielen Menschen in Deutschland nur mit „Eimersaufen am Strand“ in Verbindung gebracht wird. Seltsamerweise auch dann, wenn diese selbst noch gar nie dort gewesen sind.
Ich mache kein Geheimnis daraus, dass auch ich bereits rund um den Bierkönig unterwegs war. Allerdings kann ich bis heute nicht verstehen, warum dieser relativ kleine „Partybereich“ eine solch negative Wirkung auf den Gesamtruf der Insel hat? Wahrscheinlich weil sich Skandale über betrunkene Partytouristen besser verkaufen lassen, als ein Bericht über die Orangen von Sóller.
Nach all der durch die Pandemie verursachten, urlaubsfreien Zeit war ich kürzlich wieder einige Tage auf der knapp 3.600 Quadratkilometer großen Insel der berühmten Steinschleuderer (Els Foners Balears). Die aufgekommenen Gedankenspiele rund um ein mögliches ELF-Spiel veranlassten mich dazu, mich auch im Urlaub zumindest ein wenig mit dem Football auf der Insel näher zu befassen.
Geeignetes Stadion auf Mallorca
Auf Mallorca gibt es einige Sportplätze bzw. Sportstätten, wovon aber sicher das Heimstadion des ältesten Fußballclubs auf der Insel, dem RCD Mallorca (Real Club Deportivo Mallorca/ Reial Club Deportiu Mallorca) aus meiner Sicht für ein ELF-Spiel durchaus interessant sein könnte. Das „Visit Mallorca Estadi“ bzw. „Estadi de Son Moix“ in Palma wurde 1999 eröffnet und bietet für über 23.000 Zuschauende Plätze an. Zufälligerweise wird es aktuell im Bereich der Zuschauerüberdachungen renoviert bzw. ausgebaut.

Das Stadion befindet sich in der Cami del Rei in unmittelbarer Nähe zur Autobahn Ma-20 und kann problemlos in 15-20 Autominuten direkt vom Flughafen in Palma de Mallorca erreicht werden. Von einer Unterkunft in der Innenstadt von Palma dürfte man auch gut mit dem Fahrrad oder dem Nahverkehr zum Stadion gelangen. Parkplätze am Stadion sind vorhanden und könnten sicher auch gut für eine Power Party verwendet werden.

Mallorca Voltors
American Football selbst ist auf der Insel und unter den Mallorquinern immer noch ein Randphänomen. Allerdings ist Mallorca mit einer Football-Mannschaft in der Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano (LNFA Serie A) vertreten. Die Ursprünge dieses Teams reichen bis ins Jahr 1987 zurück und auch einige Deutsche spielten schon bei den Voltors. Zum Beispiel Max Siemssen oder Markus Hachenberg, die inzwischen beide bei Frankfurt Galaxy sind. Bei den Barcelona Dragons ist zudem Yago Rivero aktiv, der bei den Voltors ausgebildet wurde und auch in diesem Jahr für das Team in der spanischen Saison auflief.
Die Spielsaison der LNFA und damit der Mallorca Voltors beginnt gewöhnlich im Frühjahr und endet mit dem Finale („Spanish Bowl“) ungefähr im Mai/ Juni. Eine zusätzliche Teilnahme der Mallorca Voltors in der European League of Football wäre daher zumindest theoretisch denkbar. Bisher werden die Heimspiele der Voltors aber wohl nicht im großen Stadion, sondern auf einem Spielfeld in der direkten Nähe ausgetragen. Diese sollen aber gut besucht sein. In der Saison 2022 landeten die Voltors auf Platz 3 der East Conference.

Hat die Insel Potenzial für die ELF?
Nach Angaben von statista.com kamen 2016 rund 4,5 Millionen Flugpassagiere aus Deutschland in Mallorca an und die Insel zählte zum beliebtesten Reiseziel der Deutschen. Einer weiteren Statistik aus 2018 ist zu entnehmen, das über ein Drittel der gesamten Urlauber auf Mallorca aus Deutschland kam. Übrigens gaben nur 12 Prozent der Befragten aus einer Umfrage aus 2017 an, wegen des Nachtlebens am Ballermann oder El Arenal ihren Urlaub auf Mallorca verbringen zu wollen. Der überwiegende Teil reiste wegen der „Natur und Landschaft“ an.
Hinzu kommen Touristen aus anderen Ländern und dem spanischen Festland. So konnte der Flughafen in Palma de Mallorca 2018 ein Fluggastaufkommen von über 29 Millionen Menschen verzeichnen.
Mein persönliches Fazit lautet deshalb: Die Spielzeit der European League of Football befindet sich praktisch genau in der Hauptreisesaison für Mallorca. Das Wetter ist in dieser Zeit meist sonnig, heiß und trocken. Ein geeignetes Stadion für ein Spiel wäre im Prinzip ebenfalls vorhanden. Beim aufgeführten Aufkommen an Touristen auf der Insel könnten die Tickets sogar schneller ausverkauft sein, als man glauben mag. Ideale Voraussetzungen also seinen Urlaub mit einem Football-Erlebniswochenende zu bereichern. Ich würde sicher nicht extra nur wegen eines ELF-Spiels auf die Insel fliegen, aber wenn ich sowieso schon zum Urlaub auf der Insel wäre, würde ich mir definitiv ein Ticket kaufen um gemütlich mit dem Leihfahrrad oder dem günstigen Nahverkehr zum Stadion zu tingeln.
Noch ist das alles ein Gedankenspiel und man muss abwarten, ob dieses überhaupt Realität wird. Sollte es aber wirklich dazu kommen, könnte es am ELF-Game Day auf Mallorca zukünftig heißen:
