English: Multiple award winner Norm Chow to become head coach of Helvetic Guards
The European League of Football is currently in the hot phase of the 2022 season and while some teams expect top duels in the fight for the playoffs in Week 13, other teams are already preparing for next year. Thus, the Zurich franchise moved into the headlines today.
The new team named Norman Yew Heen Chow as head coach for the 2023 ELF season. Chow served as an assistant coach and coordinator at BYU, NC State, USC, UCLA and Utah, as well as a brief stint as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL) before returning to his native Hawaii in 2012 to become head coach for the first time at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Most recently, he served as OC of the Los Angeles Wildcats in the XFL in 2020. At 76, he will be the oldest active head coach in the European League of Football.
„We wanted to sign a Head Coach who brings experience from the NFL and NCAA, the American College Football League, to the table.“
CEO Toni Zöller
The Chinese-American, who was born in Hawaiʻi, achieved particular success as a coach of some well-known quarterbacks. Chow has coached athletes such as Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Philip Rivers, as well as Heisman Trophy winners like Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. Chow has also won several awards himself. The Broyles Award and the 2002 NCAA Division I-A Offensive Coordinator of the Year designation stand out in particular.
„We have a tremendous opportunity to assemble a team that all of Switzerland can be proud of. A team built on hard work, relentless effort, passion and execution. Go Guards.“
HC Norm Chow
At the Helvetic Guards, Chow will coach a team outside of the United States for the first time. Given his qualities as a QB coach, it will be especially exciting to see which quarterback the Swiss franchise will present.

HC Norm Chow
