English: Paris Musketeers join the European League of Football

Some had already declared the expansion for the upcoming season over, but they did the math without the European League of Football (ELF). Paris was officially confirmed as a franchise location today. With Paris, the ELF now comprises seventeen franchises from nine countries. One more team will follow for the 2023 season.
The Paris franchise is the Paris Musketeers or Les Mousquetaires de Paris. This proves the speculation that was set in motion after the registration of a „Société par actions simplifiée“ (roughly a partnership limited by shares) under this name in March. According to the registry entry, Frantzy Dorlean will serve as president and Marc-Angelo Soumah as chief executive officer. Soumah used to play American football professionally himself in the NFL Europe and was president of the French American Football Federation from 2010 to 2014. Frantzy Dorlean was also active in American football, playing under Head Coach Patrick Esume in the interim.
Commissioner Patrick Esume with good contacts to France
The move to France was expected by many, after all, the shared history of French football with Comissioner Patrick Esume is great. Esume was already head coach of Flash de La Courneuve as well as head coach of the French national team for four and a half years from December 2014 to June 2019, and extremely successfully at that. His successes should also be familiar to the German-speaking football community. After all, he won the World Games against Germany in 2017 and the European Championship against Austria in 2018. There is no doubt that this period was formative for both sides, so that ties are likely to be intact to this day.
The franchise has a large pool of players available
But even regardless of that, the move to France was logical. After all, France has been one of the best football nations in Europe for years. This is also reflected in the large number of French players already in the ELF. If the Musketeers manage to get even a few of them on the roster, a lot can be expected from the Paris team in sporting terms right from the start.
In the 2021 season, 19 French players have already played in the ELF. With Anthony Mahoungou, Rémi Bertellin, Vincent Buffet, Philéas Pasqualini and Wael Nasri, five ELF All-Stars came from France. This year the number was again bigger and this despite the fact that some Frenchmen from the previous year had not received a new contract with an ELF team. Once again, most of them were top performers for their teams. That almost raises the question of whether the franchise even needs to max out imports when it can rely on (and pay for) so much local talent instead.

Beim Pariser Franchise handelt es sich um die Paris Musketeers beziehungsweise Les Mousquetaires de Paris. Damit bewahrheiteten sich die Spekulationen, die nach der Eintragung einer „Société par actions simplifiée” (in etwa eine Kommanditgesellschaft auf Aktien) unter diesem Namen im März losgetreten wurden. Laut dem Registereintrag wird Frantzy Dorlean als Präsident und Marc-Angelo Soumah als Chief Executive Officer fungieren. Diese Angaben können nun bestätigt werden. Soumah spielte früher selbst professionell in der NFL Europe American Football und war von 2010 bis 2014 Präsident des französischen American-Football-Verbands. Auch Frantzy Dorlean war im American Football aktiv und spielte dabei zwischenzeitlich unter dem Head Coach Patrick Esume. Darüber hinaus ist der US-Amerikaner Patrick Butler als Co-Owner bekannt.
Patrick Esume mit guten Kontakten nach Frankreich
Der Schritt nach Frankreich war von vielen erwartet worden, schließlich ist die gemeinsame Historie des französischen Footballs mit Comissioner Patrick Esume groß. Esume war bereits Meistercoach von Flash de La Courneuve sowie vom Dezember 2014 bis zum Juni 2019 viereinhalb Jahre lang Cheftrainer der französischen Nationalmannschaft und dies überaus erfolgreich. Seine Erfolge dürften auch der deutschsprachigen Football-Community bekannt sein, schließlich gewann er 2017 die World Games im Finale gegen Deutschland sowie 2018 die Europameisterschaft gegen Österreich. Zweifellos war diese Zeit für beide Seiten prägend, sodass Verbindungen bis heute intakt sein dürften.
Dem Franchise steht ein großer Spielerpool zur Verfügung
Doch auch unabhängig davon ist der Schritt nach Frankreich logisch gewesen, schließlich gehört Frankreich seit Jahren zu den besten Football-Nationen Europas. Das schlägt sich auch in der hohen Anzahl an französischen Spielern in der ELF nieder. Gelingt es den Musketeers, auch nur einige davon ins Team zu holen, darf in sportlicher Hinsicht von Beginn an viel vom Pariser Team erwartet werden.
In der Saison 2021 waren 19 Franzosen, in diesem Jahr sogar über 30 als Athleten in der ELF aktiv. Mit Anthony Mahoungou, Rémi Bertellin, Vincent Buffet, Philéas Pasqualini und Wael Nasri kamen fünf ELF All-Stars 2021 aus Frankreich. Einige weitere waren und sind Leistungsträger ihrer Teams. Selbstverständlich darf nicht davon ausgegangen werden, dass die französischen Importspieler nun nach Paris wechseln. Ganz im Gegenteil kann das bereits ausgeschlossen werden, denn einige Athleten haben sich inzwischen beruflich und familiär im Ausland niedergelassen oder haben sich an das Leben als Importspieler gewöhnt. Dennoch deutet die Leistung der französischen Spieler bereits das Potential eines französischen Franchises an. Dieses wird auch durch die Leistung der französischen Nationalmannschaft in den letzten Jahren unterstrichen. Nach dem Europameistertitel 2018 folgte nach dem pandemiebedingten Rückzug aus dem Halbfinale ein vierter Platz bei der Europameisterschaft 2021.
Saison 2023 mit 18 Teams
Einige hatten sich eine langsame Expansion erhofft, doch wählte die Ligaführung nun eine schnellere Aufstockung. Die Saison 2023 wird daher wohl mit 18 Teams ausgetragen werden. Die Fans präferieren dabei drei Conferences mit jeweils sechs Teams. Damit einher gehen zehn Conference-Spiele sowie X Inter-Conference-Spiele. Somit könnte man bei zwölf Regular Season Games verbleiben.
