Fold-out for English version: Rhein Fire hires Richard Kent as DC
It’s been a bit quiet around Rhein Fire in the last few days. The last Instagram post is dated October 2, the last news was the departure of wide receiver Timothy Knuettel to the Canadian team Winnipeg Blue Bombers. But now Rhein Fire makes a proper return to the spotlight of ELF coverage. The Düsseldorf franchise has found a defensive coordinator.
Richard Kent and Jim Tomsula reunited
Richard Kent will succeed Jim Tomsula as Defensive Coordinator, who can now fully concentrate on his duties as Head Coach and President of Football Operations. Kent most recently served as Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach for the Leipzig Kings under Head Coach Fred Armstrong, who has since been fired.
Kent coached in NFL Europe from 1999 to 2007, winning the World Bowl with the Berlin Thunder in 2002 and the Amsterdam Admirals in 2005. The 61-year-old later spent several years coaching in the Canadian Football League (CFL), also winning a Grey Cup during that time.
One of the reasons for the move from the Kings to Rhein Fire may be Kent’s personal connection to Tomsula. The two first crossed paths at Catawba College back in 1989. At the time, Tomsula took his first coaching job as Strength and Conditioning Coach, while Kent served as Defensive Coordinator for the first time. They also later worked together with the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe.

High ambitions
Having already landed Andrew Weidinger as Offensive Coordinator, the Düsseldorf team has now signed a further top-class coach. Rhein Fire is obviously going on the offensive and underlines its ambitions with the reinforcements of the coaching staff.
To bring the championship to Düsseldorf in 2023, Fire is spending heavily. This is evidence of their increased self-confidence and the belief that they have set up a financially viable franchise. Starting with the coaching staff is certainly smart and, ideally, sustainable.
One of the new defensive coaches‘ tasks will be to get the pass rush in shape. When it comes to the sack statistics, Fire ranked at the bottom of the league in 2022, along with the Istanbul Rams. Only 17 sacks were recorded, 29 fewer than the leaders from Hamburg. But it is not only in this category where action is needed. With 4,347 total yards allowed (9th) and 314 points conceded (8th), the Fire defense found itself in the bottom third last season.

Richard Kent wird der Nachfolger von Jim Tomsula, der sich nun voll und ganz auf seine Tätigkeiten als Head Coach und President of Football Operations konzentrieren kann. Kent arbeitete zuletzt als Defensive Coordinator und Secondary Coach bei den Leipzig Kings unter Head Coach Fred Armstrong, der dort inzwischen entlassen wurde.

Hohe Ambitionen: Jetzt zählt nur der Titel
Nachdem bereits Andrew Weidinger als Offensive Coordinator an Land gezogen werden konnte, nahm das Düsseldorfer Team nun einen weiteren hochkarätigen Coach unter Vertrag. Rhein Fire geht offensichtlich in die Offensive und unterstreicht mit den Verstärkungen des Coaching Staffs ihre Ambitionen.
Um 2023 die Meisterschaft nach Düsseldorf zu holen, greift Fire tief in die Tasche. Dies zeugt vom gestiegenen Selbstvertrauen und der Zuversicht, ein finanziell tragfähiges Franchise auf die Beine gestellt zu haben. Dabei beim Coaching Staff anzusetzen, ist sicherlich klug und im Optimalfall nachhaltig.
Eine Aufgabe des neuen Defense Coaches wird es sein, den Pass Rush auf Vordermann zu bringen. In der Sack-Statistik bildete Fire 2022 gemeinsam mit den Istanbul Rams das Schlusslicht der Liga. Es standen nur 17 Sacks zu Buche und somit 29 weniger als beim Primus aus Hamburg. Doch nicht nur in dieser Kategorie besteht Handlungsbedarf. Mit 4.347 insgesamt zugelassenen Yards (9.) und 314 kassierten Punkten (8.) fand sich die Fire Defense in der letzten Saison im letzten Drittel wieder.
