English: Cologne Centurions signed Chinese Swiss Army Knife Shida Wang

It was recently announced that Shida Wang is no longer a part of the Leipzig Kings. The Saxon franchise had signed too many import players, so the European League of Football (licensing) brought this to the team’s attention. Although the Kings lobbied hard for Wang, they were ultimately unable to keep the Chinese player. After the commitment to the Kings in 2021 did not materialize due to visa problems, Wang will now not play for Leipzig in 2022 either.

However, this did not mean goodbye from Europe for the Chinese national player. Other teams from the European League of Football and the German Football League quickly contacted the 33-year-old. Today, the Cologne Centurions finally announced the signing of Shida Wang. The 32-year-old moves on loan for one season from the Leipzig Kings to the cathedral city.

„We are happy for Shida Wang to be active in the European League this season. We wish him all the best in the cathedral city on the Rhine – and are even more excited to have him back with the Kings next season.“
Frederick Armstrong, head coach and executive vice president of the Leipzig Kings.

Cologne, who had not yet exhausted their import limit, were thus able to strengthen themselves once again shortly before the start of the season. The Chinese can be used as a wide receiver as well as a strong safety and is sometimes referred to as an Swiss army knife. Wang will join the Cologne team in the coming week.

„I’m happy that Shida Wang is a Centurion now. He is one of the top players from China and I look forward to have him in Cologne now. It is a great opportunity for him to prove himself in Europe. I have coached in Asia and I m very impressed by the discipline and the level of football. I think Football in China is on a great way. It’s good to see how the game that we love is growing.“
Frank Roser, head coach of the Cologne Centurions

Wang started playing Canadian football in 2012 at Acadia Univerity in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He suited up for the Acadia Axemen, who have a lumberjack wearing a Christmas hat in their team logo. Wang played there for three years before moving back to China. In 2016, he signed with the Chinese American football team Shenzhen Naja (Wuhan Gators as of 2017). Two years later, the top athlete also co-founded the Wuhan Berserkers, currently the best team in the CNFL. He lined up for the team himself, too.

The team captain of the Chinese national team first celebrated the national championship title in the Chinese Arena League with the Wuhan Gators in 2019, before winning the CNFL championship title with the Berserkers in the fall.
